Roses in the Desert, Synopsis
Sometimes love appears to us at times and in places that we least expect, as Roses
in the Desert. Without someone to love, our lives can seem like emotional deserts,
dry and lonely, where love can appear with surprise as a precious rose. This collection
of eight engaging stories of gay romance contains unrestrained humor, tragedy, fulfillment,
wit, heartfelt torment, and characters that will steal their way into your heart.
Two of the stories are autobiographical; the rest are fiction.
Nerd Salvation A devoted and proud nerd, Max has had an
inexplicable fear of a jock from his past and has successfully avoided him. A chance
meeting and a rescue from that same jock forces Max to confront his fears and so
much more. “Nerd Salvation” is a story punctuated with humor, fear, longing and
love.
On My Own A coming of age story, “On My Own” is a story
of innocence, pathos and awakening. Growing up an only child, raised by a widowed
father, Jason is about to become a man, but suddenly becomes independent in every
way. He must not only come to grips with the cards he’s been dealt on the 1930s
farm he’s inherited, but does his best friend Charlie feel for him what Jason feels
for Charlie?
Motorcycle Cop A traffic stop becomes something completely
different in “Motorcycle Cop.” The rescued becomes the rescuer, and the authoritarian
becomes the submissive. With twists, turns and surprise plot developments, want
becomes need and lust evolves into love.
Lost “Lost” is an autobiographical story of unrequited
love and tragedy. In a teeter-totter relationship of want and longing, two teenage
boys attempt to resolve their need for one another.
Puppies Unconditional love between two unrelated youngsters
raised as siblings becomes the catalyst for romance, but not as you might imagine.
“Puppies” intertwined as babies become friends and friends become “Puppies.”
The One That Got Away Sometimes love never has the chance
to grow because of perceived barriers. In the autobiographical “The One That Got
Away,” when one is ready for more, the other isn’t and vice versa. History repeats
itself in this struggle with which many can identify.
The Fork in the Road There are many forks in the road
of life, many paths from which to choose. When we arrive at these points of decision
the choice can be difficult. Choosing someone to help us make sense of our choices
can lead to unexpected consequences. “The Fork in the Road” is full of surprises.
Mud Fence An overheard conversation between a mother and
an aunt reveals to a boy that they both see him as ugly. As a withdrawn adult, Eric
sculpts his sorrow into an adobe wall, his “Mud Fence,” surrounded by a beautiful
garden of roses and shrubs. Open to the public, a local television celebrity visits
his garden. Their chance meeting opens a door, but fear of rejection must be overcome.
